Sport Premium

Home Farm Primary School Sports Premium Strategy

The Government provides Sports Premium funding to primary schools to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of sports and PE provision provided. Sports Premium funding is designed to make an impact across five key indicators:

  • the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school;
  • the profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement;
  • increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport;
  • broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils;
  • increased participation in competitive sport.

In 2022-23 Home Farm Primary School will receive funding of £19,080 Sport Premium.

HOW ARE WE SPENDING OUR SPORTS PREMIUM FUNDING?

We use our Sports Premium funding to:

  • Develop the skills and capacity of our teaching and Learning Support Assistant staff to deliver high quality PE teaching and coaching, by investing in specialist coaches to work alongside our staff;
  • Broaden the range of sports provision that we offer, and to give our children the chance to participate, during curriculum time, in a range of broader sporting and outdoor opportunities such as fencing, dance, BMX, gardening, and orienteering.
  • Increase participation in sports by offering a broad range of opportunities for extra-curricular sports and physical activity, and by subsidizing some of these extra-curricular opportunities so that they are affordable to all families;
  • Increase our participation and success in competitive sports by supporting our participation in local leagues and competitions;
  • Raise the profile of sporting activities by participating in and running special one-off sporting events such as festivals, tournaments and other competitions;
  • Provide additional targeted swimming provision to ensure that all Year 6 children are able to meet the requirements of the national curriculum;
  • Promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles through a focus on gardening and active teaching using the resources available to us in our outdoor areas and wildlife areas.

Sports Premium Yearly Expenditure Summary

How do we measure our success?

We monitor the success of our spending in this area using a number of factors including our participation in competitive school sports, how well we work in partnership with others, and how well we link our PE with other aspects of the curriculum. We also measure success on the basis of improvements in provision and participation.

  • In Autumn 2012, we were offering six different extra-curricular clubs over 6.5 hours focusing on sport and physical activity;
  • By Autumn 2014, this had increased to 25 hours of out of school sporting or other physical activity, through the provision of 11 clubs involving over 180 filled places.
  • We have maintained this level of provision and participation, and in Autumn 2019, we are offering ten different extra-curricular clubs focusing on a range of activity including fencing, gardening, dance, football and netball.
  • In 2022 we introduced a new after-school Yoga club;
  • We have also increased the level of participation in extra-curricular activities by girls.

During the year, we are also providing PE and sports coaching during curriculum time provided by professional specialist coaches, in addition to PE lessons already coached by our teaching staff. All of our classes receive this specialist provision.

Swimming

We provide a high quality programme of swimming to children across all year groups in the school. The Department for Education requires us to report specifically on how many pupils within our Year 6 cohort meet the national curriculum requirement to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

  • At the end of 2018-19, 90% of our Year 6 cohort met this requirement.
  • As the end of 2019-20, swimming was not assessed due to the school being closed to pupils as a result of the pandemic.
  • At the end of 2020-21, 73% of our Year 6 cohort met this requirement.
  • At the end of 2021-22, 74.2% of our Year 6 cohort met this requirement.
  • At the end of 2022-23, 63% of our Year 6 cohort met this requirement.
